Breastplate of St Patrick
Composed in the first days of the evangelisation of Ireland in Tara (in what became the Diocese of Meath), St Patrick's Breastplate prayer is one of the most well known and beloved treasures to be passed down from the early days of the Church in Ireland. At first transmitted only by oral tradition in Old Irish for centuries, it was eventually written down some time in the ninth century.
A work of poetic brilliance, it was composed by St Patrick as a defense against the many deadly enemies that waylaid him and his companions. It has been used as a powerful aid against any and all dangers posed against our bodies and souls, and has been recommended by exorcists, priests, religious, and lay folk alike as an powerful companion to navigating the storms and trials of life.
