Five Decade Penal Cross Rosary
These rosaries are handmade by the monks of Silverstream Priory with high quality Jujube wood beads and a sturdy Crucifixes.
THE BEADS
According to some traditions, Our Lord’s crown of thorns was made from one of the varieties of Jujube tree which is native to Palestine. The beads that our rosaries are made with are a deep, warm brown in colour and vary slightly in hue, some touched with a slightly lighter reddish brown. Their finish is glossy.
THE CROSS
The ‘Penal Cross’ was designed in the Penal Times in Ireland to have short arms so that it could be quickly hidden up one’s sleeve. The markings on it are representations of the various instruments of the passion and code for various legends associated with passion of Our Lord. For example, on the back of the cross is the chicken, that according to legend, St Peter’s wife was cooking when she was told that Christ had risen. She exclaimed, ‘I’ll sooner believe that this chicken I’m cooking would rise than that Christ has!’ and immediately the chicken in the pot rose up and flew away!
